Yukon Haiku

YUKON TERRITORY

July 1999

Campfire dances,
    flame from flame reaching
        toward dry spruce boughs.

                    Dogs on chains,
                          one sleeping in sunlight,
                             one watching the trail.

                                  Eagle on spruce top
                                        being circled and harassed
                                            by two noisy gulls.

                                                    Drifing in canoe
                                                          seeing the bottom
                                                              of Pine Tree Lake.

                                                                 Dall sheep dot the rock
                                                                       of St. Elias Mountains
                                                                           with white like snow to come.

                                                                                Storm bowls down slopes
                                                                                       of St. Elias Range,
                                                                                           campers dream while canoe
                                                                                              sinks.
